About The Position

To provide knowledge, motivation, and leadership in an activity in which the student can excel to their full potential while competing in an atmosphere that adds to total education, including physical well-being, moral character, and social and mental development.

Requirements

  • Must be 19 or older for Assistant Coach and 21 or older for Head Coach.
  • Must have current First Aid/CPR certification or be able to acquire it by the start of the season.
  • Understand the activity/sport, its safety practices, techniques, rules, and progression of skill development.
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude toward students and the ability to motivate them toward developing a successful program.
  • Be able to consistently meet schedule responsibilities for practice, coaching preparation, competition, and related activities.
  • Ability to plan practices and events, and organize all the necessary materials and personnel to carry out the activity.
  • Ability to work with students, colleagues, parents, and officials in a positive, professional, and equitable manner.

Nice To Haves

  • Type II Driver’s License, preferred.
  • Previous coaching experience at the Secondary level.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes regarding the techniques, rules, and safety practices of the sport.
  • Develops and organizes practice program.
  • Schedule and conduct practices according to agreed-upon schedules.
  • Practice time for each sport is 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Supervise athletes from the scheduled beginning of the practice or game until the last athlete is picked up, knowing where all participants are at all times.
  • Supervise athletes during activities in connection with athletic events, including practices, games, camps, and travel.
  • Promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct the program in harmony with the total school program.
  • Set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct, including respecting and supporting contest officials.
  • Foster among the participants and spectators an appreciation of the values of athletics, an attitude of good sportsmanship, and a sense of pride in self, team, school, and community.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle to student-athletes.
  • Ensure that all athletes have completed and submitted all required documentation, including the medical insurance coverage form, and have undergone and passed any required medical examinations before the regular practice season begins.
  • Communicate with parents regarding team rules and athletic department guidelines.
  • Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance and/or conduct of their student.
  • Know and understand the student-athlete handbook.
  • Follows state, conference, and district regulations governing the athletic program
  • Adhere to all safety laws and district policies.
  • Follow the injuries, care, and prevention procedures as documented in the Mead School District Athletic Policies and Procedures.
  • Complete and submit accident reports for any injury to the school principal or designee.
  • Recognize and adhere to any athlete's health plans.
  • Provide equal opportunities to all athletes as per the student nondiscrimination policy.
  • Annually complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA-approved rule clinic for the sport being coached
  • Hold valid first aid and CPR certifications.
  • Complete trainings as required by the District and the WIAA.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by District Administrators or the Athletic Director.
  • Works with the athletics director in scheduling practices and competitions.
  • Assists the Athletic Director with the selection and evaluation of the assistant coaches.
  • Assigns duties to assistant coach/coaches as necessary
  • Determines, with feedback from the assistant coaches, athlete participation during practices and games, including team level and playing time, in conjunction with the assistant coach at the respective level.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Works with AD and Athletic Administrative Assistant to ensure that lists of all players eligible for athletic contests are prepared and maintained under the rules of the Mead School District Athletic Policies and Procedures.
  • Communicates with AD and Building Administration regarding topics related to the athletes and/or sports season.
