About The Position

The Banfield DVM Externship is designed for veterinary students to gain hands-on experience by shadowing a mentor veterinarian. The extern will observe and participate in clinical procedures, ensuring the safety and comfort of pets and clients while learning about hospital operations and veterinary practices.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine or related area required.
• Enrolled in a DVM/VMD program at a college of veterinary medicine.
• Ability to multi-task and manage multiple tasks under distracting conditions.
• Strong communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
• Demonstrated organizational ability and problem-solving skills.
• Client service skills to ensure attentive and courteous service.
• Basic mathematical ability for computations and conversions.
• Comfortable using computers and specialized software.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in a veterinary setting or related field.
• Familiarity with veterinary procedures and protocols.

Responsibilities

• Shadow the mentor veterinarian to observe and participate in clinical procedures.
• Meet with the mentor to identify program expectations and create learning goals.
• Learn all aspects of hospital organization and function by observing and participating in procedures with the mentor doctor.
• Ensure the safety of pets, clients, and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques and maintaining clean treatment areas.
• Provide professional and efficient service, performing procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance and assisting in surgical procedures.
• Act as the extra eyes, ears, and hands for the veterinarian to ensure quality pet care.
• Mentor and be mentored through the objectives of the Externship Program.
• Perform other job duties as assigned.
