About The Position

Clark Street Bakery is seeking a Bakery Shift Lead to help run daily bakery operations with consistency, efficiency, and care. This role is hands-on and leadership-focused — ideal for someone who is highly organized, confident in bakery prep, and able to guide a team through a fast-paced production environment. The Shift Lead plays a critical role in ensuring prep is completed accurately according to recipes, staff are supported and held accountable, and daily bakery operations run smoothly from open to close. This is a working lead position — you will be expected to perform all prep tasks yourself while also managing and supporting the team.

Requirements

  • Prior pastry and/or bakery experience required
  • Previous lead, supervisor, or keyholder experience strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of bakery prep workflows and production environments
  • Excellent communication skills — verbal and written
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong attention to detail and recipe accuracy
  • Reliable, punctual, and prepared to work
  • Comfortable giving direction and feedback to peers
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs
  • Food Handler Card (required)
  • ServSafe Food Protection Certification (preferred; must be obtained if not already held)

Responsibilities

  • Lead bakery staff during assigned shifts and ensure smooth daily operations
  • Assign, track, and verify completion of prep tasks according to recipes and production standards
  • Train, coach, and support team members on prep techniques, workflow, and efficiency
  • Ensure staff arrive on time, prepared, and ready to work
  • Foster a positive, respectful, and collaborative team environment
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with both staff and management
  • Ensure all prep is executed accurately and efficiently according to Clark Street Bakery recipes and standards
  • Be fully proficient in all bakery prep tasks to provide hands-on guidance and training
  • Monitor pacing and workflow to meet production needs without waste or burnout
  • Ensure the correct number of lards (or designated doughs / items) are pulled and staged for the following day
  • Take and record end-of-day inventory accurately
  • Complete and submit a daily shift report detailing production, staffing, issues, and notes for management
  • Communicate any shortages, equipment issues, or concerns to the Bakery Manager
  • Ensure prep areas are clean, organized, and properly closed out
  • Monitor staffing levels throughout the shift
  • Know when and how to cut staff appropriately to avoid overtime while maintaining production needs
  • Support management goals related to labor efficiency and food cost control
