About The Position

POSITION PURPOSE The Bakery Operations Specialist monitors, supports, and enforces execution of the division’s merchandising plan for the Bakery department within assigned stores. This role is responsible for training, coaching, and developing store teams to ensure consistent operational, merchandising, and service excellence. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Operational Execution & Merchandising Travel to assigned stores to work directly with Department Managers and teams to communicate merchandising plans and ensure execution that meets sales, gross profit, and labor targets. Partner with Department Managers and Store Directors on all aspects of product merchandising, production standards, and customer service. Visit stores regularly to evaluate department presentation, cleanliness, product quality, compliance, and execution of company programs. Measure store‑level performance through department sales, gross profit, and labor percent. Review results of merchandising and operational plans, observe department conditions, and provide actionable feedback. Training & Development Provide work guidance to store associates, including product knowledge, sales and marketing techniques, customer engagement, and understanding key profit‑and‑loss drivers. Train Department Managers on operational fundamentals and effective management of department performance. Assess the effectiveness of training programs through evaluations and follow‑up. Provide performance input and feedback to Store Directors regarding Department Managers. PEOPLE RESPONSIBILITIES Direct: None Indirect: Department Managers, Bakery associates (through coaching and influence) SCOPE DATA Multi‑state responsibility within the Division. Requires adaptability to varying market types, including both rural and urban locations. KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE Education College degree preferred, or equivalent work experience. Experience 5+ years grocery retail experience with strong operational understanding across Front End, Grocery, and Fresh Departments. Previous Department Manager and Store Director experience required. Skills & Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals in person and over the phone. Marketing orientation with strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities. Competent math skills to support accurate analysis and operational reporting. Strong leadership presence with the ability to influence, lead, and motivate teams without direct supervisory responsibility. TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Division‑wide travel required, up to 70%. Must have reliable transportation and availability for overnight travel. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT Work primarily performed in a temperature‑controlled office environment. May sit for extended periods at a desk or computer workstation. Regular use of standard office equipment including computers, phones, calculators, etc. Frequent travel throughout the Division to visit retail locations, attend meetings, and participate in business activities.

Requirements

  • 5+ years grocery retail experience with strong operational understanding across Front End, Grocery, and Fresh Departments.
