About The Position

The Baker is responsible for baking products for orders and to replenish displays in the Bakery Department. This role requires maintaining a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient customer service to both customers and team members. The Baker will engage with customers, take orders, manage production schedules, prepare and bake various bakery products, ensure product freshness, and handle incoming inventory. The position also involves understanding and maintaining bakery equipment, ensuring proper signage, addressing safety issues, and operating as a lead with bakery clerks. Additionally, the Baker will assist with ordering supplies, merchandising, and scheduling in the absence of the bakery manager, while adhering to company policies and sanitation procedures.

Requirements

  • Ability to solve practical problems; variety of variables with limited standardization; interpret instructions.
  • Ability to do arithmetic calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Ability to copy data from one record to another, interview to obtain basic information, guide people and provide basic direction.
  • High school or equivalent experience.
  • Over six months up to one year of similar or related experience.
  • Physically able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects.
  • Visual requirements include vision from more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet with or without correction, color vision, depth perception, and field of vision.
  • Ability to perform the following physical activities: Stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

  • Provide prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee’s designated department or elsewhere in the store.
  • Make an effort to learn customers’ names and to address them by name whenever possible.
  • Assist customers by: escorting them to the products they’re looking for, securing products that are out of reach, loading or unloading heavy items, making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests, performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.
  • Answer the telephone promptly and provide friendly, helpful service to customers who call including taking product orders.
  • Check orders for the day and set up a timeline and production schedule.
  • Prepare make up, bake, and fry all department products as needed.
  • Review the status and appearance of product for freshness and pull by stale date.
  • Invoice and put away product as instructed by the department manager.
  • Anticipate product needs, not only for the current day but subsequent days.
  • Inspect incoming products quality and quantity, e.g. mispicks.
  • Understand the use and issues related to bakery equipment and follow up on potential maintenance issues.
  • Check signage for correct labels on ad items.
  • Review department for potential safety issues, e.g. hot racks or knobs in hot water.
  • Operate as a lead with bakery clerks.
  • Prioritize orders as per customer and department manager request; check orders (not only special orders, but future orders for the day).
  • Proof necessary items.
  • Pull product from the freezer or the cooler.
  • Understand and practice proper sanitation procedures and ensure the work area is always clean and neat.
  • Maintain strict adherence to department and company guidelines related to personal hygiene and dress.
  • Adhere to company policies and individual store guidelines.
  • Report to work when scheduled and on time.
  • Order supplies and merchandise items for the department (except cake decorating items) as directed by the bakery manager.
  • Review current product on the shelf, re-merchandise the shelf, and throw away or recycle outdated products.
  • Write the department schedule and ensures employees are at work, on time, and finds replacements when necessary, in bakery manager’s absence.
  • Assist in other areas of store as needed.
  • Perform other job related duties and special projects as required.
