About The Position

The Bailiff is responsible for the orderly and professional running of the courtroom and assists in the general operation of the Court. This includes maintaining the Court's calendar, serving as a liaison to various parties, preparing the courtroom for hearings, and ensuring security and proper operation during court sessions.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Ability to deal with other people effectively and tactfully
  • Ability to operate basic office equipment
  • Good organizational skills
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and manages the Court's calendar
  • Serves as the primary liaison to attorneys, self-represented litigants, judges, or other local officials, providing information relating to court hearings and charges
  • Prepares courtroom for hearings, including any specialized equipment needed by the parties
  • Ensures that all doors to the courtroom, office, and jury room are unlocked and locked properly each day
  • Secures courtroom in emergencies
  • Assists the Judge as necessary with technology and coordination with parties for remote or hybrid hearings
  • Prepares and mails juror summons and special questionnaires, if necessary
  • Responds to questions from prospective jurors regarding deferrals and exemptions from jury service
  • Responsible for the security, care, and control of the jury during jury trial
  • Arranges for interpreters for deaf and non-English speaking parties and witnesses
  • Responsible for checking in litigants and attorneys before hearings
  • Observes individuals in courtroom and waiting area noting their attitudes, mood changes, body language, and general demeanor
  • Thinks independently to assess and adapt to rapidly changing situations
  • Intervenes with individuals who may be angry, irrational, and emotionally distressed
  • Diffuses hostile situations and alerts courthouse security as needed
  • Provides clerical support to the Judge as requested
  • Prepares and/or distributes necessary paperwork during court sessions
  • Responds to inquiries, complaints, and concerns as they arise
  • Uses the case management system for a variety of functions
  • Complies with the applicable provisions of the Indiana Code of Judicial Conduct
