The Special Education Teacher at Bailey Gatzert Elementary is responsible for creating a supportive and effective learning environment for students with special needs. This role involves working under the general direction of the building principal or program manager, with assistance from appropriate staff personnel. The teacher will establish and adapt learning objectives and standards based on district guidelines and regulations governing special education. The primary focus is to provide tailored instruction, counseling, discipline, and supervision to meet the individual needs of assigned students, while also evaluating their performance and progress. In this position, the teacher will foster an educational environment conducive to the learning and maturation process of special education students. This includes planning instructional programs that meet individual student needs, preparing lesson plans, and modifying programs as necessary. The teacher will utilize appropriate instructional methods and materials suited to the students' well-being and the nature of the learning activities. Continuous professional development is encouraged through in-service training and study to remain current in special education instructional methods. The teacher will also establish classroom policies and procedures to govern student behavior, providing guidance and discipline to encourage achievement and conduct. Communication with students, parents, guardians, and specialists is essential to maintain positive relationships and support student success. The teacher will set classroom goals aligned with individual education programs (IEPs) and evaluate student progress, preparing reports for parents or guardians as needed. Additionally, the teacher will direct the activities of assigned non-certificated personnel, ensuring that the physical, emotional, behavioral, medical, or hygienic needs of students are met. Collecting and interpreting data to develop, implement, and evaluate IEPs is a critical function of this role, along with attending required staff meetings and participating in professional development activities.
