About The Position

KENTECH is seeking an experienced Senior Background Investigator (Independent Contractor) to support the delivery of pre-employment investigation and background screening services for a California public transit agency.

This role will be responsible for independently conducting comprehensive background investigations in support of public-sector hiring decisions. The investigator must exercise professional judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, and operate in full compliance with California and federal investigative requirements.

This is a contract engagement, contingent upon contract award.

Requirements

• Active California Private Investigator License (BSIS), required
• Proven experience conducting pre-employment or background investigations
• Strong working knowledge of FCRA and California investigative compliance requirements
• Ability to work independently and manage assigned caseloads
• Excellent written documentation and report-writing skills
• High level of professionalism, discretion, and ethical judgment

Nice To Haves

• Located in Sonoma or Marin County, California
• Experience supporting public agencies or government entities
• Familiarity with transportation, rail, or safety-sensitive hiring environments
• Prior experience working as an independent investigative contractor

Responsibilities

• Independently conduct pre-employment background investigations for public-sector candidates
• Perform applicant interviews, personal reference checks, and employer verifications
• Verify education, employment history, driving records, and required documentation
• Review and assess criminal history information in compliance with applicable laws
• Conduct credit checks and other authorized record reviews as required
• Prepare accurate, objective, and defensible investigative reports
• Meet required turnaround timelines established by the client
• Maintain secure handling of sensitive information and investigative materials
• Coordinate with KENTECH for case intake, deliverables, and quality standards
