Backend Software Engineer
About The Position
Our client is a fast-growing, venture-backed healthcare AI company building a next-generation, cloud-based platform that modernizes medical imaging workflows. They are replacing legacy, on-premise systems with an AI-powered solution that helps medical professionals work more efficiently, reduce administrative burden, and unlock meaningful productivity gains. This is a small, high-impact engineering team operating in a mission-critical domain, where performance, reliability, and thoughtful system design directly affect real-world outcomes in healthcare. As a Backend Software Engineer, you will play a key role in building and scaling the core server-side systems that power an AI-driven medical imaging platform. You’ll take ownership of critical backend components and work closely with cross-functional partners to deliver a robust, production-grade system.
Requirements
- 4+ years of experience in backend software engineering
- Strong experience with Python and Django
- Proven track record building and operating complex backend systems in cloud environments
- Experience designing data models and processing pipelines
- Familiarity with distributed systems, performance optimization, and production reliability
- Product-oriented mindset with strong ownership and attention to user impact
- Ability to work onsite in San Francisco
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Terraform , Kubernetes , or containerized infrastructure
- Exposure to AI, ML, or LLM-powered systems in production environments
- Systems programming or infrastructure-adjacent experience
- Familiarity with healthcare, medical imaging, or regulated software environments (not required)
Responsibilities
- Designing, building, and maintaining a high-performance backend application
- Ingesting, processing, and storing large-scale medical imaging data
- Supporting AI/LLM inference workflows within backend services
- Building APIs and services required for a modern web application
- Ensuring reliability, scalability, security, and performance in a cloud environment
- Collaborating closely with product and engineering teammates to deliver end-to-end features
