Our flagship product, BLTN, is a real-time, AI-powered bulletin sharing platform that replaces the legacy email workflows police departments have relied on for decades. By enabling officers and analysts to easily create, search, and link bulletins across agencies, we’re turning static documents into actionable intelligence—faster, safer, and more connected. The Role We’re on the hunt for a high-impact Back-End Lead Engineer to help power the next generation of law enforcement technology. This isn’t just another backend job—you’ll be at the heart of a real-time, mission-critical platform used by public safety professionals nationwide. You’ll architect bulletproof systems, lead with technical precision, and move fast alongside a tight-knit, driven team. You’ll work closely with the CTO and cross-functional teams to shape backend architecture, mentor developers, and ensure BLTN is fast, secure, and always-on. This is a hands-on role with leadership scope—ideal for someone who wants to build and scale real-world systems that make a difference.
Requirements
- 6+ years of backend development experience, including experience scaling production applications.
- Deep expertise in Python.
- Strong experience with AWS (especially RDS/PostgreSQL, OpenSearch, Lambda, ECS).
- Proficiency in SQL and NoSQL alike.
- Familiarity with CI/CD best practices
- Experience designing for security, fault tolerance, and observability.
Nice To Haves
- Prior startup or mission-critical environment experience strongly preferred.
- Experience working with or around public safety, govtech, or regulated environments.
Responsibilities
- Architect & Build: Lead the development of scalable backend services using Python, FastAPI, PostgreSQL, and OpenSearch.
- Own Performance: Optimize database queries, caching, and infrastructure to ensure lightning fast responses at scale
- Lead & Mentor: Conduct code reviews, provide technical guidance, and help grow the backend engineering culture.
- Deploy & Operate: Build and maintain robust CI/CD pipelines; own the uptime and reliability of our backend services.
- Collaborate Cross-Functionally: Work with product, design, and front-end teams to deliver features that meet user needs and agency constraints.
- Security & Compliance: Help maintain data integrity and secure access controls in alignment with CJIS and other compliance requirements.
