About The Position

The AWS RDS SQL Database Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining relational database systems within Department of Navy systems. This role ensures the availability, performance, security, and scalability of AWS Relational Database Service (RDS) instances while adhering to strict organizational policies and compliance requirements. The ideal candidate brings deep expertise in cloud infrastructure management, database administration, and cybersecurity best practices within a cloud environment. As with any position, additional expectations exist. Some of these include, but are not limited to, adhering to normal working hours, meeting deadlines, following company policies as outlined by the Employee Handbook, communicating regularly with assigned supervisor(s), staying focused on the assigned tasks, and completing other tasks as assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field
  • Proficiency in SQL database management, including schema design and performance tuning
  • Experience with AWS RDS features such as Multi-AZ deployments, Read Replicas, and Performance Insights
  • Hands-on experience with cloud infrastructure management tools such as AWS CloudWatch, CloudFormation, and IAM
  • Knowledge of database security practices, including encryption and auditing
  • Active DoD Secret clearance or the ability to obtain one
  • If applicable: If you are or have been recently employed by the U.S. government by the U.S. government, a post-employment ethics letter will be required if employment with VSolvit is offered

Nice To Haves

  • Active DoD Secret or Top Secret clearance
  • Experience implementing DISA STIGs for SQL databases in an AWS environment
  • Familiarity with Navy RMF processes and ACAS scanning
  • AWS Certified Database – Specialty or AWS Certified Solutions Architect

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain AWS RDS instances for SQL databases, including configuration, optimization, and monitoring
  • Configure and manage parameter groups, security groups, and storage options for RDS instances
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks including backups, patching, and updates to ensure system reliability
  • Implement high availability and disaster recovery solutions using AWS features such as Read Replicas and Multi-AZ deployments
  • Configure automated backups and snapshots for AWS RDS instances to ensure data integrity
  • Ensure database security by implementing encryption for data at rest and in transit, access controls, and auditing
  • Apply Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs) and ensure compliance with the Risk Management Framework (RMF) and other regulatory standards
  • Conduct regular vulnerability scans and remediate findings using tools such as Assured Compliance Assessment Solution (ACAS)
  • Develop and test disaster recovery plans to ensure rapid restoration in the event of failure
  • Monitor database health and performance using AWS tools like CloudWatch, Performance Insights, and Enhanced Monitoring
  • Analyze and optimize database queries, indexes, and schema designs to improve performance and resource utilization
  • Use AWS Query Performance Insights to identify and resolve technical bottlenecks
  • Generate detailed reports on database metrics, including uptime and storage utilization, for stakeholders
  • Maintain detailed documentation of database configurations, processes, and procedures
  • Work closely with application developers, system administrators, and security teams to ensure seamless integration
  • Utilize ticketing software including ServiceNow and Jira for task management
