About The Position

The Associate Vice President (AVP), Clinical Laboratory Services serves as the senior administrative and operational leader for UT Southwestern Health System Clinical Laboratory Services (CLS). This role has institution wide responsibility for laboratory operations supporting our patients across the Health System. The AVP provides strategic, financial, and operational leadership for a highly complex, integrated laboratory enterprise comprising more than 420 FTEs and an annual operating budget of approximately $170 million. The AVP will report directly to the Health System Chief Operating Officer. Operating within a dyad leadership model, the AVP partners closely with the Department of Pathology and the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Services to ensure excellence in quality, safety, service, research support, and financial stewardship, while advancing UT Southwestern's clinical, academic, and research missions across the health system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • 8 years of progressively responsible clinical laboratory or service line experience
  • 5 years in a leadership role.

Responsibilities

  • Provides visible, values-based leadership to foster a culture of excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement across Health System Clinical Laboratory Services.
  • Builds, develops, and retains a highly engaged and high-performing workforce through intentional leadership development, succession planning, and performance management.
  • Partners with the Department of Pathology, Human Resources, and Health System leadership to attract top clinical, technical, and administrative talent, and support recruitment, retention, and engagement strategies.
  • Leads effectively within a matrixed academic health system environment, building consensus and alignment among faculty, staff, physicians, and system leaders.
  • Establishes strong working relationships with laboratory section medical directors, nursing leadership, oncology leadership, ambulatory operations, home care leadership, and medical group leadership to ensure seamless care delivery and service excellence.
  • Has full administrative and operational accountability for all clinical laboratory services across the UT Southwestern Health System, including hospital-based, behavioral health, cancer, ambulatory, and home care settings.
  • In partnership with the Medical Director of Clinical Laboratory Services, leads a dyad governance model to ensure technical excellence, quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and cost-effective operations across all sites of care.
  • Ensures laboratory quality monitoring, auditing, occurrence management, and performance improvement activities meet or exceed requirements of CLIA, CAP, AABB, FDA, FACHT, Joint Commission, state, and federal regulatory bodies.
  • Drives continuous improvement in clinical quality, turnaround time, service reliability, patient safety, and customer satisfaction through collaboration with clinical and operational stakeholders across the health system.
  • Oversees laboratory space planning, construction, capital planning, and equipment acquisition in coordination with Health System leadership and the Department of Pathology.
  • Partners with Health System Information Resources to prioritize, resource, and deliver Laboratory Information System (LIS) initiatives and related digital enablement projects.
  • Supports and advances clinical research and oncology services by developing and maintaining laboratory processes that enable research, clinical trials, precision medicine, and innovation.
  • Collaborates with Health System leadership, the Department of Pathology, and Revenue Cycle teams to ensure appropriate pricing structures, charge capture, and financial integrity across all laboratory services.
  • Leads development and execution of a comprehensive, system-wide laboratory strategy aligned with UT Southwestern's mission, values, and long-term Health System strategy.
  • Establishes a strategic roadmap focused on laboratory quality across dimensions of accuracy, safety, service, stewardship, access, and equity.
  • Integrates strategic planning with operational and capital budgeting processes to ensure financial sustainability and disciplined resource allocation across the enterprise.
  • Identifies and develops opportunities for growth, service expansion, outreach in North Texas, and business development in partnership with the Department of Pathology and Health System leadership.
  • Maintains deep awareness of industry trends, emerging technologies, automation, workforce innovations, and partnership models to position UT Southwestern at the forefront of laboratory medicine.
  • Evaluates and implements new technologies, platforms, and equipment that enhance quality, efficiency, scalability, and affordability of Health System laboratory services.
