The Assistant Vice President ensures departmental accountability to Duke’s mission, vision, values, and policies with goals to: (1) improve community cancer care through DUHS affiliation consultation and education, (2) establish and operate income generating clinical and research programs with community hospitals (3) position Duke as the preferred resource for cancer clinical program development and (4) enhance the image of and access to all DUHS cancer clinical and research programs.

  • Collaborate with DUHS (including DHIP), DCI, SOM and SON senior leaders to develop and support strategies for growth based on market analysis, revenue potential and brand protection.
  • Create tactical plans with direct reports to execute strategic initiatives.
  • Identify, develop and manage new business opportunities to maximize growth and network portfolio.
  • Engage in internal departmental collaboration to develop and support department strategy, goals, and tactics.
  • Develop and foster effective collaboration across Duke Health to advance cancer clinical and research affiliations.
  • Work collaboratively and effectively in a dyad leadership relationship with the DCN Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer.
  • Create productive physician relationships to ensure collaborative problem solving and support physician leadership’s clinical initiatives.
  • Ensure effective communication of affiliation initiatives to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Partner with internal and external marketing teams to optimize communication strategies.
  • Manage co-branding strategies, ensuring consistency and visibility of the Duke Cancer Network across affiliates.
  • Provide forums for staff input on improvement opportunities.
  • Oversee the provision of relevant education, highlighting Duke experts and meeting the identified needs of affiliate programs.
  • Oversee DCN leaders in measuring affiliation effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Lead tailored program assessments and manage actionable follow-up recommendations.
  • Serve as a member of the departmental executive leadership team, supporting a systems approach through collaboration and teamwork across all Affiliations and Networks programs.
  • Improve operational and business processes to enhance efficiency and affiliate service.
  • Identify opportunities to improve fiscal and operational performance.
  • Directly manage a team of Senior Directors/ Directors in supporting strategic and operational initiatives of the DCN and DHAN.
  • Collaboratively manage the provider clinical services at affiliated programs.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative, regulatory, and accrediting body requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable research rules and guidelines.
  • Oversee monitoring to ensure affiliate programs meet DUHS criteria for program participation.
  • Communicate program progress to the site and Duke Health leadership.
  • Oversee department of budgets and financial targets.
  • Oversee revenue cycle and billing for assigned departments.
  • Collaborate with Duke Health senior executive leadership to secure adequate financial resources.
  • Master’s degree in a related field is required, healthcare and oncology concentration strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years’ experience in hospital operations including at least three years at the administrative leadership level.
  • Ability to lead effectively in a matrixed organization with high collaboration.
  • Strong leadership, management, analytical, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Knowledge of physician practice management, clinical operations, research practice, and healthcare payment systems.
  • Motivation and initiative in pursuing professional growth.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to assess situations and implement improvement or corrective actions.
  • Skill in influencing opinions, attitudes, and decisions across diverse stakeholders.
