About The Position

Reporting to the VCUHS CIO, the Associate Vice President (AVP) of Digital Transformation will lead health system initiatives to accelerate technology adoption, drive business value creation, and foster a culture of innovation through agile transformation. This role will oversee IT portfolio management, clinical informatics, quality assurance, IT finance, and IT communications to ensure alignment between technology investments and organizational goals. The AVP partners with health system leaders to translate strategic goals into prioritized initiatives that deliver measurable benefits for patients, caregivers, team members, and the health system in alignment with VCUHS mission and vision.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Business, Health Administration or related field.
  • 10 years of progressive leadership experience including 5+ years in an IT leadership role
  • Deep understanding of healthcare operations, clinical workflows, regulatory environment, and reimbursement models.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to influence, create relationships and collaborate internally and externally at all organizational levels.
  • Experience in business planning, strategy and operations.
  • Experience managing capital and operating budgets.
  • Direct agile development and/or portfolio management experience.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute short- and long-term strategic technology roadmap aligned with organizational priorities in partnership with health system executives. Establish and maintain frameworks for tracking, analyzing, and reporting technology investments, aligning them with health system priorities and strategic goals. Routinely report progress at the Technology & Data Governance Committee and other committees as requested.
  • Agile Transformation: Define and lead IT agile strategy to enhance delivery speed, quality, adaptability, and value realization. Establish Agile Center of Excellence to coach leaders and teams, implement outcome-oriented planning, standardized roles and tooling. Promote a culture of continuous improvement and innovation across teams.
  • Portfolio Governance, Risk and Compliance: Develop and maintain an agile portfolio management framework that aligns with organizational goals. Lead portfolio-level planning, prioritization, and funding decisions based on value and strategic impact. Establish metrics and dashboards to provide visibility into portfolio performance, value realization, and risk management. Partner with Information Security, Risk and Compliance teams to ensure digital transformation initiatives meet all regulatory, privacy, and security requirements (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH). Communicate portfolio health and progress to executive leadership and stakeholders.
  • Organizational Change Management: Lead the Clinical Informatics program and organizational change management efforts to promote clinician engagement and adoption of digital tools through training, communication, workflow analysis, process improvement and change management. Identify opportunities and ensure adoption of technologies to enhance patient care, operational efficiency, and research.
  • Technology Business Management: Lead IT financial planning, budgeting, and cost optimization strategies to ensure transparency and accountability. Collaborate with finance, operations, and executive leadership to evaluate the business value of technology initiatives and support informed decision-making across the health system.
  • Operational Excellence: Establishes, implements, and integrates continuous-improvement programs and standards for the IT organization using a Lean management framework. Oversee the development and maintenance of IT policies, procedures, methodologies, and governance to ensure the IT organization delivers high quality solutions and value to the enterprise.
  • IT Communications: Partner with Enterprise Communications to develop and implement communication strategies to keep stakeholders informed about IT initiatives, progress, and impact. Foster engagement and collaboration through clear, consistent messaging across the organization.
  • Talent Management: Recruit and retain team members and develop high performing teams. Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and commitment to customer service, as well as create teams that are agile, proactive, technically skilled, and have a sound understanding of health system business needs. Perform other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects in order to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department.
