About The Position

Benchmark Space Systems is looking for an Avionics Engineering Intern to join our team for the summer of 2026. In this role, you will work closely with engineers to design, build, and test technologies supporting the next-generation of in-space propulsion products for small satellites. Interns will gain valuable knowledge in industry best practices, use of engineering software, and documenting and presenting engineering results. Requirements

  • Candidates must be enrolled in an accredited college or university and seeking a degree in electrical, software, or computer engineering, or a closely related field.
  • U.S. Person required.
  • Hands-on test and debugging skills in the lab, including use of standard equipment such as logic-analyzers, oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, multimeters, and data acquisition systems.
  • Familiarity with configuration management processes and tools such as Git.
  • Experience with C or C++ coding in resource constrained systems such as microcontrollers or embedded computers.
  • Schematic design Experience with KiCAD, Altium, or similar.
  • Execute on analysis, schematic capture, board layout, manufacture, and test/verification on prototype and flight electronics.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary and geographically dispersed team.
  • Ability, agility, and can-do attitude to work in an entrepreneurial, fast-paced, and matrixed cross-functional environment.
  • Uses effective written, visual presentation, and oral strategies to communicate technical problems and concepts to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous internship or research experience in the space industry is a plus, but not required.
  • Previous internship or research experience related to small satellite technologies.
  • Have worked on a project that produced flight-hardware.
  • Aerospace, rocketry, or other engineering club experience.
  • Ability to read and understand electrical drawings, diagrams, schematics, and manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Design circuits and printed circuit boards (PCB), from concept through simulation and layout.
  • Creating, modifying, and reviewing test plans and procedures.
  • Perform initial PCB bring-up testing, and any final assembly as necessary.
  • Creating and managing design, assembly, and testing schedule.
  • Identify and communicate opportunities for improvement in test process and workflow to increase efficiency and quality of internal and external deliverables.
  • Documenting test results, procedural redlines, and authoring test reports.
  • Take direction and effectively balance multiple projects/workloads simultaneously.
  • Proactively and regularly communicate status of assignments.
  • At all times, maintain Benchmark's outstanding reputation for operating at the highest levels of honesty, integrity, accountability, and transparency.
