About the position

The Principal Operations Inspector (POI) is responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of air carrier operations under the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This role involves applying expert knowledge of aviation regulations, developing standards and procedures, and providing guidance to field personnel. The POI plays a critical role in regulatory surveillance, policy assistance, and the evaluation of training methods and equipment, while also representing the FAA in various boards and committees related to aviation safety.

Responsibilities

  • Independently plans, designs, and carries out programs and projects related to air carrier operations.
  • Provides policy assistance to divisional field level Aviation Safety Inspectors (ASIs) on complex inquiries.
  • Advises inspectors on major changes in aircraft operations and standardizes evaluation procedures.
  • Evaluates new training methods and equipment for initial certification.
  • Serves on national boards to determine necessary equipment for safe aircraft operation.
  • Analyzes flight operations involving large fleets of turbojet aircraft.
  • Develops plans to resolve operational problems and issues.
  • Assists in preparing technical correspondence for the aviation industry and government agencies.
  • Participates in the FAA flight program to maintain qualification and currency requirements for operations inspectors.

Requirements

  • Must meet minimum eligibility requirements for an Aviation Safety Inspector in the 1825 series.
  • At least 1 year of pilot experience in multi-engine aircraft over 12,500 pounds.
  • Possession of a valid second-class FAA medical certificate.
  • Minimum 1,500 total flight hours and 100 flight hours in the last 3 years.
  • Specialized experience in operations with Part 121, including enforcement actions and inspections.
  • Oversight and certification experience with air carriers operating under Extended Twin Operations (ETOPS).
