About The Position

The Aviation Crash Engineer will oversee detailed inventories and conduct engineering condition assessments of crash-test documents and legacy media, including paper, film, photos, videos, and oscillographs. They will also evaluate selected physical artifacts, such as biodynamics seats, helmets, and related equipment. Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the required customer clearance for access to systems, facilities, equipment and property.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of research experience working in field.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field (degree must be from an accredited university) and a minimum of ten (10) years of research experience working with aircraft seat systems, occupant protection, crash test hardware, and test instrumentation standards beyond attainment of the degree.

Responsibilities

  • Lead item-level and batch-level inventories and engineering condition assessments of crash-test records and legacy media (paper, film, photos, video, oscillographs) and selected physical artifacts (biodynamics seats, helmets, related equipment).
  • Apply engineering judgment and format-specific criteria to develop written disposition recommendations (retain, transfer, preserve, digitize-conceptual, or identify for excess/destruction subject to Government approval).
  • Document chain of custody, handling controls, and interim safeguards for fragile media and artifacts during appraisal and transfer processes.
  • Coordinate technical findings and resolve ambiguous or high-risk cases with the CAMI records custodian, FAA technical SMEs, and contract management.
  • Maintain thorough documentation (condition reports, photographic records, metadata) to support disposition recommendations and future stewardship.
  • Aid other members of the CAMI with this task upon request.
