About The Position

The Part-time Audio-Visual Preparator reports to the Senior Production Manager and Director of Education and Public Engagement. The Audio-Visual Preparator will work closely with the Senior Production Manager, New Inc, Education and Public Engagement, and Operations Staff to complete production needs during load-in, operation, and strike. Tasks will include operating sound and video equipment for artist talks, concerts, screenings, workshops, hybrid events, livestreams, and residencies. Events are typically presented in the New Museum Theater, but additional programming occurs in other museum spaces (e.g. Sky Room, Forum, lobby, galleries, conference rooms) or outside venues. The Part-time Audio-Visual Preparator is an on-call position with shifts dependent on the Museum’s Education and Public Engagement programming on an as-needed basis and will require evening work as required by the Museum’s Education and Public Engagement calendar, mostly on Thursday evenings for public programming.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience operating and maintaining theatrical and live event audio, video, lighting, and electrical technology and systems.
  • Basic experience with hand tools, rigging equipment, and lifts.
  • Comfortable working at heights and ability to lift 40+ lbs.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to communicate with staff who possess varied degrees of technical expertise.
  • 3 to 5 years’ experience working in event production, corporate audio-visual, or technical theater.
  • Degree or certificate from film, video, or live event production training program or commensurate experience.

Responsibilities

  • Setup, operate, and monitor audio and video technology around the Museum including the Theater, Sky Rooms, Forum, and other locations around the Museum.
  • Perform routine inventory and maintenance of audio-visual and theatrical production equipment.
  • Install, test, and maintain audio visual equipment, including speakers, audio consoles, microphones, projectors, video switchers, and television monitors.
  • Act as FOH (front-of-house) engineer, mixing live sound for talks, panel discussions, and concerts, as assigned.
  • Assist with creation, installation, operation, and implementation of video and livestreaming systems as needed.
