Role Summary: As an Autonomy Engineering Specialist at Caterpillar, you will lead the engineering back‑office workstream supporting the development of advanced automation and autonomous technology solutions for machines and jobsites. This role works closely with embedded machine engineering teams and digital solution teams to define functional requirements for delivering connected and autonomous capabilities through Caterpillar’s fleet management platforms. A key focus of this role is understanding customer workflows, application profiles, and user personas to design autonomy solutions that maintain productivity as customers adopt automation, remote control, and autonomous technologies. You will also help ensure diagnostic capability, supportability, and end‑to-end system validation are built into delivered solutions.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or Engineering from an accredited college or university OR equivalent working experience
  • Experience in the development of web solutions or machine performance and control systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of developing machine technology
  • Understanding of Construction Industry Applications, Mining Industry Applications, or related segments
  • Prior knowledge of assist, automation, or autonomy systems in the areas of positioning, planning, and/or perception
  • Self-motivated, results-driven individual with a unique blend of technical expertise and business acumen.
  • Stays current with emerging technologies in automation, autonomy, AI, and advanced sensing systems

Responsibilities

  • Understand onboard task autonomy technology capabilities and how they relate to back-office requirements.
  • Lead cross‑functional, global teams to define and execute task‑level automation and autonomy solutions.
  • Analyze and understand existing customer workflows, application profiles, and personas to ensure all needs are addressed.
  • Develop autonomy workflows optimized for customer productivity during technology transitions.
  • Collaborate and drive development across an enterprise matrix organization.
  • Incorporate troubleshooting, diagnostics, and supportability considerations into workflows.
  • Evaluate customer feedback and integrate insights into product enhancements.
  • Ensure successful end‑to-end solution delivery, including system consistency, reliability, and security.
  • Ensure integration and validation between onboard machine systems and off-board software platforms.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff to grow and improve the team’s overall engineering capability.
