The autonomic lab technologist facilitates a battery of tests to measure the functioning of the autonomic nervous system. The technologist, working alongside a neurologist, will measure the heart rate and blood pressure of the patient who will be exposed to a variety of stimuli that are controlled by the technologist such as deep breathing, active standing, and passive head-up tilting on a tilt-table. In addition, the technologist will assist the neurologist in obtaining a sympathetic skin response test that will evaluate and record the galvanic response from the skin. The technologist will be responsible for preparing the patient for autonomic testing in the lab, as well as providing explanations of what to expect prior to, during and after testing. When the testing is complete, the technologist organizes the data into a report.
