About The Position

The Automotive Technician II performs advanced fleet maintenance duties including fleet vehicle inspections, preventative maintenance, advanced diagnostics, adjustment, mechanical and electrical repair, scheduling vehicles for maintenance and repair, and maintaining the necessary vehicle records. This position also performs equipment installation duties, comprehensive safety inspection and testing of new vehicles, assembly, installation, removal and repair of special equipment, and reconditioning of used vehicles to prepare them for sale.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
  • Four years in automotive, light/medium vehicle, and/or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Must have (or obtain within 120 calendar days from date of hire) a Texas State Inspector's license.
  • Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License
  • Advanced skill in using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade.
  • Advanced skill in mechanical repair procedures for gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Advanced skill in brake repairs to include antilocking braking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Advanced skill in diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Effectively manage time to meet and exceed company-set metrics and goals.
  • Proficient skill in using computers and Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Must have strong computer and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of automatic and manual shift transmission repair.
  • Proficient skill in brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems.

Nice To Haves

  • ASE certification is highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains and repairs pickup trucks, service body trucks, grounds equipment, sedans, side by sides, golf carts, ATVs, trailers, Class 8 trucks and trailers used in District operations.
  • Professionally inspects, diagnoses and repairs equipment, while delivering an excellent customer experience
  • Diagnoses and repairs to vehicle/equipment specifications -- brake and hydraulic, exhaust, basic electrical, cooling system, suspension and alignment, perform all maintenance services
  • Adequately explains technical diagnoses and needed repairs to non-mechanical individuals which may include employees and customers on an as-required basis
  • Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment. Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, taillights and parking lights. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment. As required, operates vehicles and equipment related to these activities operate.
  • Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems.
  • Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into Fleet Management Information System (FASTER).
  • Trains new technicians on company procedures and equipment. Assists with the skills training of less experienced technicians.
  • Utilizes schematics for advanced troubleshooting and repairs. Communicates directly with the supervisor if any additional service is needed. Provides an estimate of the time needed for additional repairs.
  • Maintains shop appearance and safety standards and ensures the shop runs in an efficient manner by performing duties such as inventory stocking and other general functions.
  • Continuously maintains a clean and safe working environment
  • Keeps shop management aware of mechanical repair problems as they occur
  • Adheres to all company policies, procedures, safety and environmental rules
  • Continuously learns new technical information and techniques in order to stay updated with rapidly changing automotive technology and perform work in accordance with specifications
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
