About The Position

This is semi-skilled work in servicing automotive equipment. Work involves responsibility for giving periodic routine maintenance and simple repairs to City-owned equipment in accordance with a prescribed schedule. Assignments include the simpler maintenance and service tasks associated with automotive equipment, including changing oil, greasing, servicing batteries and in checking inflation of tires, tire work and basic routine maintenance. Service workers occasionally work with skilled mechanics as helpers. Assignments are given orally and in writing. Work is checked by the performance of the equipment serviced.

Requirements

  • A minimum of one (1) year work experience relating to servicing automotive equipment; and
  • Valid driver's license [will be verified for finalists]; and
  • Ability to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) within six (6) months of hire.
  • Some knowledge of the less complex mechanical parts of automotive equipment.
  • Some knowledge of the greasing and lubrication requirements of moderately heavy public works equipment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to use computer maintenance system for repair completion and scheduling.
  • Skill in lubricating and greasing City owned equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Greases and lubricates automobiles and various types of trucks and heavy automotive equipment; and services batteries and other parts.
  • Changes and repairs tires and installs and services batteries, spark plugs, light bulbs, fan belts and other simple mechanical parts.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs minor automotive electrical systems generators.
  • Does minor tune-ups to include spark plugs, ignition wires and associated components.
  • Performs brake inspections and necessary minor repairs to include removing/replacing rotors, drums, brake pads, brake shoes, wheel cylinders, master cylinders and caliper.
  • Assists a journeyman in repair of automotive equipment by performing the less skilled tasks.
  • Installs various types of equipment such as tail lights, seat covers and other automotive equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand and power-driven tools and mechanic's tools including bench equipment such as grinders, sanders, drill presses, testing equipment, tire balancer, tire changer and similar shop tools and equipment.
  • Keep work area clean to prevent slips, trips and falls.
  • Performs related work as required.
