Introduction The San Joaquin County Public Works - Fleet Services Division is recruiting to fill one full-time Automotive Mechanic vacancy and to establish an eligible list which may be used to fill future vacancies. Pre-Employment Physical, Drug Screen and Background : Potential new hires into this classification are required to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug screen and a background investigation as a condition of employment. Final appointment cannot be made unless the eligible candidate has passed the drug screen, physical and successfully completed the background process. The County pays for the initial drug screen and physical Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of an application. TYPICAL DUTIES Inspects, diagnoses problems, repairs and overhauls automobiles and gasoline-powered trucks in the field or shop. Operates equipment to analyze engine troubles; diagnoses on-board computer fault codes, noises, and mechanical failures; adjusts and/or repairs fuel injection systems; repairs and installs automotive equipment such as starters, alternators, windshield wiper motors, sirens, spotlights and special police equipment. Tunes engines using diagnostic and electronic testing equipment; checks and certifies smog control devices; replaces main and connecting rod bearings; inspects and repairs automatic transmissions, universal joints, differentials, transaxles, front and rear axles, power steering systems and anti-lock brake systems; inspects and repairs hydraulic accessory systems such as lift gates; relines and adjusts brakes; aligns wheels. Inspects and repairs automotive air conditioning equipment. Evaluates the condition of cooling systems, locates faults or defects, and makes necessary repairs. Prepares work reports as required. May train and inspect the work of Equipment Service Workers and/or Automotive Mechanic Apprentices. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EITHER PATTERN I Experience: Two years as an Automotive Mechanic Apprentice in San Joaquin County service. OR PATTERN II Experience: Two years of automotive mechanic work repairing late-model vehicles which included front wheel drives, fuel injection systems, command control computer systems, transaxles, power steering systems, anti-lock brake systems, automatic transmissions, alternators, and air conditioning equipment. AND FOR BOTH PATTERNS License: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
