An Automotive Mechanic performs a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair work on a variety of automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment. Work of this class involves no lead or supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class may work shift work including weekend hours and are subject to callback. Work is performed in an automotive repair shop where unpleasant odors, dirty and greasy shop conditions are regularly encountered. Work requires strenuous physical exertion including lifting, bending, crawling and periods of prolonged standing.

Requirements

  • Education: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate.
  • Experience: Have four years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive and other mechanical equipment.
  • Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license or an equivalent driver's license and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
  • PROVISIONAL DRIVER’S LICENSE ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.
  • NOTE: YOU MUST UPLOAD A COPY OF YOUR VALID DRIVER’S LICENSE WITH APPLICATION AT TIME OF APPLYING.
  • Knowledge of electrical fuel, drive, engine, brake and related gasoline and diesel equipment and the techniques of their repair.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used to repair a variety of automotive and other mechanical equipment.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the practices and methods of automotive equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledge of the tools and materials required in automotive equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to repair, replace and adjust the above systems.
  • Ability to read and understand service manuals, parts catalogs, schematics and written work rules.
  • Ability to road test equipment.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.

  • Performs a wide range of diagnostic, installation, maintenance and repair work on a variety of automotive, heavy truck, heavy equipment and other mechanical equipment.
