About The Position

The purpose of this position is to service, maintain, and repair all fleet vehicles, motorized, and mobile equipment used by University of Oregon personnel. The fleet of vehicles and equipment includes passenger cars, pickups, vans, dump trucks, flatbed trucks, garbage trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors, school buses, electric vehicles, air compressors, portable and stationary generators, welders, rollers, mowers, edgers, weed trimmers, rototillers, turf vacuums, chainsaws and miscellaneous powered and non-powered equipment. The incumbent may be responsible for conducting trainings with other University staff and students with mechanized vehicles and equipment. Interactions/contacts occur daily with the campus community in the course of performing work and responding to emergencies. This position works as a member of a team while frequently performing tasks independently. Decisions may be made about the best method and materials necessary to perform a particular task. They may also include setting priorities, assessing customer needs and responding to those needs. Work is reviewed regularly by the Associate Director of Environmental Services to ensure it is performed efficiently, safely, and meets both expectations and applicable requirements. A performance appraisal is conducted annually.

Requirements

  • Four years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience diagnosing and performing a variety of complex repair work on automobiles, trucks, or industrial equipment; OR
  • Completion of an approved automotive mechanic program from an accredited institution and three years of journey-level automotive mechanic's experience.
  • Repairing internal combustion engines and/or all motor vehicle components.
  • Using advanced vehicle repair techniques.
  • Diagnosing complex vehicle and/or equipment problems.
  • Interpreting information from on-board computers.
  • Applying shop reference manuals and safety and environmental laws, rules, and procedures.
  • Applying customer service methods and procedures.
  • Perform duties in a way that advances and supports the mission of the department and university.
  • Work effectively in a diverse team environment and create effective relationships for problem solving and positive interactions.
  • Take initiative, looking for what needs to be done and doing it.
  • Pay close attention to detail.
  • Maintain a safe and safety-conscious workplace.

  • Model the highest ethical standards.
  • It is an essential requirement of this position to qualify for and maintain UO driver's certification eligibility, which includes maintaining an Oregon driver’s license throughout employment in this position.
  • This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during times of emergencies and inclement weather.
