About The Position

The Automotive Lab Technician is responsible for keeping automotive facilities and equipment in working condition so students will have an optimum learning environment.  The Automotive Lab Technician interacts with division faculty and staff to establish instructional and equipment needs, establish annual automotive facilities budgets, and to support faculty with lab activity as needed.  The Automotive Lab Technician assists in the hiring of student laboratory assistants and will be responsible for their training and supervision. Prepares and sets up facilities and laboratory materials, demonstrations, and practical exams working with faculty/administrator in the automotive facilities area.  Practices preventive maintenance including preparation of equipment, performing spot checks to determine working condition, cleaning and servicing tools and equipment as specified in the operator's manual, as well as set up and take down of the laboratory session/setup where applicable. Coordinates with faculty, staff, student assistants, and other technicians to assure the general cleanliness of laboratories and maintains a clean, safe laboratory environment. Provides technical support and advice and acts as information resource for full time and adjunct instructors and division staff for the automotive areas (both service and engineering technology). Supports faculty in development of laboratory activity and automotive facilities to support the same.  Supports adjunct and full-time instructors during class time. Assures the proper operation of a wide variety of mechanical machines and devices by adjusting the machines to prescribed operating standards or performant rates.  Implements and maintains policies and procedures to comply with ASE Education and College Standards. Determines needs for disposable items for all equipment and supplies for the automotive labs.  Keeps up-to-date records of inventory, orders, and receipts.  Purchases supplies/equipment; researches products, prepares/analyzes bids, purchases required items, receives shipments verifying contents, assembles, tests/installs new equipment/instruments; maintains and properly controls/stores inventory. Supports and assists the Dean of ASET in the identification of lab equipment needs. Assesses general organization of laboratories, instituting reorganization of equipment as necessary, stocking items in appropriate locations. Minimizes institutional liability regarding the College's compliance with federal regulations by complying with policies, laws and regulations governing environmental protection, safety, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.  Coordinates all safety related tasks, including maintaining MSDS records and waste disposal issues in the automotive lab per OSHA guidelines. Contributes to an accident-free work environment by complying with operator's instructions for the use of power tools, wearing protective gear such as goggles, hearing protectors, back supports, and work gloves, reporting incidents of unsafe work activity to supervisors, and following standard safety precautions. Performs regular planned, skilled mechanical work in the installation, operation, maintenance, modification, service and repair of automotive systems to locate and diagnose faults and malfunctions, monitoring the performance of the system, troubleshooting problems, and making adjustments and/or performing minor repairs using a variety of research-type instruments and equipment and arranges for major repairs and/or replacement, as necessary. Assists faculty in the recruitment of potential student laboratory assistants.  Trains student laboratory assistants in updated safety procedures as appropriate in an automotive laboratory.  Supervises student laboratory assistants to facilitate the daily running of laboratories. Streamlines customer cars for service and repair consistent with service guidelines.  Focuses on customer needs and customer satisfaction, projects and positive customer service environment to both internal and external customers, and promotes and encourages an attitude of exemplary customer service and high integrity to all faculty, staff, students and community members. Works with full time and adjunct faculty to turn in yearly budget for the automotive labs. Ensures efficient workflows and optimum business operations by creating a procedures manual of work processes. Participates in division functions and meetings.  Participates in promotion, publicity and recruitment events for the automotive programs in particular and division in general.  Participates in appropriate College committees, activities and events. Executes responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the organization's policies, which includes the Code of Ethics. Coordinates and implements special projects related to the department and coordinates activities with other departments to accomplish the mission and vision of the College. Promotes and adheres to the College values of customer service, diversity and inclusion, respect and civility, collaboration and communication, and creating a positive culture. Remains competent and current by attending professional development courses, software training classes, and courses and/or training sessions as directed. Contributes to the overall success of the department by performing all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in related field and a minimum of five (5) years of related experience in automotive field, service or engineering/testing and R&D required.
  • Will consider an Associate's degree in related field and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience.
  • ASE certification in one of the areas preferred, G1 required or must be able to get within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of maintaining equipment used in an automotive teaching lab.
  • Knowledge of automotive testing equipment.
  • Knowledge of MCCC's vision, mission, and values and a commitment to further its educational goals and strategic plans.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of MCCC and skill in providing administrative support to such activities.
  • Knowledge and proficiency of office technology skills including Microsoft products and a willingness to learn and master new technologies as needed.
  • Knowledge of grammar, punctuation, spelling and the correct usage of the English language.
  • Knowledge or experience with college budgeting systems such as Colleague or Informer or Banner highly preferred.
  • Skill in calibrating/troubleshooting instrumentation and equipment in the automotive lab.
  • Skill in maintaining and updating records and related systems by displaying strong attention to detail, dedication to customer service, and a team approach to work.
  • Skill and proficiency in the use of office equipment and technology, computers and related software, such as word processing and spreadsheets, and the ability to master new technologies.

  • Mechanical abilities sufficient to use tools and affect minor repairs to laboratory equipment.
