This position will support the Agency’s mission by performing skilled work as an automotive equipment mechanic, troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, overhauling, performing routine maintenance on gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment and other related equipment.

Requirements

  • Possess a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency and two years of experience as a mechanic in passenger vehicle and heavy equipment repair and maintenance.
  • An additional year of experience, for a total of three years of experience, in passenger vehicle or heavy equipment repair and maintenance is a substitute for a High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency.
  • Possess a valid Class 'E' drivers license and obtain a Class 'B' CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position and obtain a valid Class 'B' CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.

  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, small engines and heavy equipment; diagnostic equipment.
  • Skilled in the use of hand tools and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles and troubleshoot automotive and equipment problems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled work in the diagnosis, repair, overhaul and replacement of gasoline or diesel engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes, electrical systems, hydraulic systems and other parts and major components in automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, and other related equipment.
  • Field test vehicles and equipment to ensure the repairs have been satisfactorily completed.
  • Repairs, changes, and balances tires on automotive and heavy equipment.
  • Perform preventative maintenance work to ensure that equipment is maintained and is in proper working order.
  • Comply with all waste generation, storage, and disposal laws, rules, and policies.
  • Assist in the maintenance of proper documentation of all waste generation and disposal activities.
  • Submit requests for parts and supplies.
  • Respond to emergency road service calls and perform minor repairs to vehicles and equipment.
  • Clean up after repairs and return tools to their proper location.
  • Perform minor welding, paint and body repairs as needed.
  • Instruct other mechanics or helpers in the repair of automobiles, trucks, and other equipment.
