Vulcraft of New York, a division of Nucor, is seeking a forward-thinking Automation Technician to join our dynamic team. The Automation Technician is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and supporting automated equipment, control systems, and industrial technologies to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations. This role works closely with maintenance, engineering, and operations teams to support production equipment, improve system performance, and assist with automation projects.

Requirements

  • 5 years of prior maintenance experience
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting PLC-controlled systems (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of industrial electricity, sensors, relays, contactors, VFDs, and motor controls
  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics
  • Basic computer skills for documentation and software interaction
  • Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs and RSLogix or Studio 5000
  • Experience with HMIs such as PanelView, Ignition, or similar systems
  • Ability to initiate, lead and uphold safety practices, policies, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

  • Manufacturing or industrial experience
  • Understanding of networking basics (Ethernet/ip, industrial networks)
  • OSHA and industrial safety knowledge

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.
  • Troubleshoot, maintain, and repair automated production equipment, including PLC-controlled systems.
  • Diagnose electrical, controls, sensor, drive, and HMI issues to minimize downtime.
  • Support startup, commissioning, and modification of automation systems.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, ladder logic, and technical manuals.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on automation and control systems.
  • Assist engineering and maintenance teams with automation upgrades and continuous improvement projects.
  • Work with vendors and contractors during automation installations or improvements.
  • Ensure automation systems meet safety, code, and operational requirements.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, backups, and change records for control systems.
  • Follow all safety procedures and support plant safety initiatives.
  • Attend necessary training to further knowledge.
