Automation Project Engineer Aurora, IL (West Chicago Suburbs) Full-Time Engineer the Future of Smart Manufacturing Are you a mechanical engineer who thrives at the intersection of automation, innovation, and hands-on problem solving? At Pregis, we're looking for an Automation Project Engineer to lead the development of electromechanical systems that drive productivity, reduce waste, and transform how our customers operate. This is a high-impact role within our New Product Development (NPD) team, reporting directly to the Chief Innovation Officer. You'll design and deploy automation solutions from concept to commercialization - and help shape the future of engineered packaging systems.

  • Design and develop electromechanical automation systems in a collaborative, cross-functional environment
  • Lead projects through the full development cycle - from concept and prototyping to production handoff
  • Manage internal and external engineering resources, vendors, and fabrication partners
  • Own project scope, budget, and timelines through the Stage Gate process
  • Build proof-of-concept hardware and physical prototypes to validate design intent
  • Create and maintain BOMs, cost estimates, and SolidWorks models throughout development
  • Collaborate with controls, PCB, and industrial design teams to ensure seamless system integration
  • Support commercialization efforts across production, service, marketing, and sales
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering
  • 4+ years of experience in automation and/or controls
  • 4+ years of project management experience in product development environments
  • SolidWorks proficiency and strong CAD modeling/drawing skills
  • Deep understanding of Design for Manufacturability and cost optimization
  • Strong analytical and creative problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational abilities
  • Familiarity with Stage Gate processes and cross-functional collaboration
