The Automation Engineering Manager is responsible for leading a team of Automation Engineers that design, test, and troubleshoot control systems in the MARSHALLTOWN production facility. They manage the electrical and programming tasks of automation projects to conform with safety and quality standards as well as product specifications. A successful candidate is someone who works well in cross-functional teams, is a hands-on problem solver, and can apply their industry experience to MARSHALLTOWN projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering from accredited university.
  • 5-8+ years of progressive automation engineering and robotics experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex engineering challenges by implementing sound engineering principles and utilizing novel hardware and software approaches.
  • Extensive experience with electrical drawing software such as AutoCAD Electrical, programming PLCs, HMIs, and robots, and designing safety circuits.
  • Experience with manufacturing equipment in the areas of forging, stamping, casting, welding, machining, & assembly.
  • Strong technical zeal, critical thinking, problem solving, and troubleshooting experience.
  • Strong communication skills to interface with product development, manufacturing, marketing, finance, and supplier personnel.
  • Strong data analysis and decision-making skills to drive projects to successful completion on schedule.
  • Strong talent acquisition and retention abilities to build a high-performing team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and manage day-to-day tasks of automation team members ranging from senior automation engineers to engineering interns.
  • Lead efforts to specify, source, and test components for use in automation systems. This includes PLCs, robots, vision systems, motors and drives, sensors, networking equipment, etc.
  • Use strong analytical approach to problem-solving to create effective solutions for manufacturing challenges.
  • Lead efforts to commission automation equipment in a production environment and provide ongoing equipment support.
  • Review and provide guidance concerning the design and creation of electrical drawings, panel layouts, safety circuits and automation cell designs.
  • Provide guidance on best practices for programming PLCs and HMIs.
  • Mentor engineers on troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and design of experiments.
  • Support and continuously improve existing automated systems.
  • Lead project activities to coordinate work among multiple engineering disciplines.
