About The Position

We are seeking a highly skilled Automation Engineer to support heavy manufacturing operations through advanced robotic welding and automation solutions. This role is responsible for troubleshooting automated weld systems, programming and updating robotic/PLC logic, supporting new technology insertion, and ensuring optimal weld quality and system uptime. The engineer will work cross-functionally with welding engineering, maintenance, production, and technology insertion teams to drive innovation and efficiency in weld automation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, Electrical, Manufacturing, Welding Engineering/Engineering technology and 4 years of equivalent experience
  • Proven experience with collaborative robots (Cobots)
  • Proven expertise in robotic programming (ABB Rapid/Robot Studio, Fanuc RoboGuide/Weld Pro)
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, welding processes, metallurgy, and automation integration tools (visions systems, seam tracking/finding, sensors)
  • Ability to lead new technology insertion projects from concept through implementation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with root cause analysis capability.
  • Excellent communication skills with ability to train, document, and collaborate cross-functionally.

Nice To Haves

  • 5+ years' experience in robotic welding or heavy weld automation in manufacturing (defense, shipbuilding, heavy equipment, automotive or rail preferred).
  • AWS Certified Welding Engineer (CWEng) or Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)
  • Robotics OEM certifications (FANUC, ABB)
  • Certified Robotic Arc Welder (CRAW)
  • PLC/HMI programming certifications
  • Hands-on experience with PLC programming and troubleshooting (Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, Siemens)
  • Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma and Industry 4.0 practices preferred

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues in robotic welding cells, PLCs, seam tracking/finding, vision systems, sensors, and related automation equipment
  • Develop, modify, and optimize robot programs (FANUC, ABB, and equivalent) and PLC logic (Siemens, Rockwell)
  • Support new technology insertion, including evaluation, pilot and integration of advanced welding and automation solutions
  • Collaborate with welding engineers on parameter development, metallurgy considerations, and defect prevention
  • Lead installation, commissioning, and qualification of new automation systems.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, preventative maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting guides
  • Train technicians and operators in robotic programming, troubleshooting, and safe operation practices
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to improve throughput, quality, and reliability of weld automation systems
  • Ensure compliance with ANSI/RIA robotic safety standards, welding codes, and internal quality requirements
