The Controls Technician is responsible for ensuring the reliable and efficient operation of automated and electrical control systems. This role involves installing, configuring, maintaining, and repairing control equipment and instrumentation. A strong understanding of electrical circuits, control logic, instrumentation, and automation processes is essential. The technician works closely with engineers, maintenance teams, operators, and vendors to support safety, productivity, and continuous improvement. An associate degree in engineering, electronics, or a related technical field—or equivalent experience—is required. This position typically reports to a supervisor or manager. Requirements

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology, Automation, Industrial Maintenance, or related field; or equivalent experience.
  • 2-5 years’ experience with control systems in industrial or commercial settings.
  • Strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, sensors, and instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and technical documents.
  • Experience programming and troubleshooting automation platforms (e.g., Rockwell, Siemens, Schneider Electric).
  • Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
  • Proficient with diagnostic tools like multimeters and oscilloscopes.
  • Basic networking knowledge related to industrial control systems.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Physical ability to climb ladders, lift up to 50 lbs, and work in various environments.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Frequent standing, walking, reaching, and bending.
  • Occasional climbing, crawling, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Use of hands for handling and fingering tasks.
  • Adequate vision and hearing to perform job duties.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred certifications in PLC programming or industrial controls (e.g., Siemens, Allen-Bradley).

Responsibilities

  • Install, configure, calibrate, and test control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, sensors, actuators, and related devices.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics, control drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair control panels, wiring, and field devices to minimize downtime.
  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance on automated equipment and control systems.
  • Program and modify PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and automation software per project requirements.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of new automation projects and system modifications.
  • Collaborate with engineers and project managers on system upgrades and process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with safety codes, standards, and company policies.
  • Train operators and maintenance personnel on control systems and provide technical support.
  • Respond to emergency breakdowns and provide after-hours support as needed.
  • Stay updated on emerging technologies and best practices in automation and controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
