Covia is looking for a dynamic Automation/Controls Engineer Intern who will have a positive impact on the Engineering & Operations Teams at several of Covia's locations. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to learn and participate in the design, implementation, and optimization of automation and control systems that support plant operations. The internship will run May 18, 2026 - August 7, 2026.

Requirements

  • Pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Controls, Mechanical, Industrial, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Demonstrated interest in control systems, automation technologies, and process optimization.
  • Familiarity with or willingness to learn programming in PLCs, HMIs, or SCADA systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and within a diverse team environment.
  • Logical thinker with a desire to learn new technologies and apply innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Learn and adhere to the safety principles of Covia, including PPE use, MSHA regulations, industrial hygiene, and workplace inspections.
  • Gain hands-on experience with automation and controls systems (PLC, HMI, SCADA) used in plant operations.
  • Assist engineers in troubleshooting, programming, and optimizing automated equipment and control systems.
  • Support continuous improvement projects focused on increasing efficiency, reliability, and safety through automation solutions.
  • Participate in system testing, documentation, and implementation of process control improvements.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to support day-to-day control system needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
