About The Position

Position Summary: The University of Maryland Department of Transportation Services is seeking an Auto Services Mechanic to join our team. The Auto Services Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing automobiles, light- and medium-duty vehicles, and specialized equipment, including heavy-duty transit buses and motor coaches. Experience working on commercial passenger transit vehicles is preferred. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the university’s fleet. Requirements

  • Four years progressively responsible experience in servicing, maintenance, and repair of motor vehicles or motor equipment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the basic principles of operation, basic components, malfunctions, repair practices and preventive maintenance techniques for internal combustion engines including diesel and motor vehicle systems and sub-assemblies.
  • Thorough knowledge of the proper use, care and maintenance of standard hand and power tools.
  • Skill in the proper use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the automotive trade.
  • Skill in and ability to diagnose and correct motor vehicle malfunctions.
  • Ability to read, understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to keep simple records and make written reports; to communicate effectively; to work in, on, around, under and over machinery and/or fixed equipment; to work at heights of up to 25 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools and supplies; to exert force up to 70 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
  • Must have a valid Maryland commercial driver’s license (CDL) with a Passenger & Air Brakes endorsement or have the ability to obtain one within six months of employment.
  • Employees in this job class must possess and maintain the required driver’s license with no more than five (5) points.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working on commercial passenger transit vehicles is preferred.
  • Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance and repairs on automobiles, light- and medium-duty vehicles, and specialized equipment, including heavy-duty transit buses and motor coaches that support the university community.
  • Conduct thorough inspections and testing of vehicles, automotive systems, and related equipment to accurately diagnose malfunctions and determine effective repair solutions.
  • Fabricate, replace, and assemble parts as needed, and tune and adjust both 2- and 4-cycle gasoline and diesel engines to ensure safe, reliable performance.
  • Perform comprehensive preventive and routine maintenance services, including fueling, oil changes, lubrication, cleaning, A, B, C, and D services, seasonal servicing, DOT inspections, and preventative maintenance inspections to maximize fleet reliability and longevity.
  • Utilize and perform work using accepted techniques and available equipment, parts, and supplies. This may involve experience with O/I communications systems and the ability to diagnose problems using computer equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, labor hours, and vehicle scheduling.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and contribute to a clean, safe, and organized maintenance environment.
  • Support the training and development of student maintenance assistants, contributing to a collaborative and team-oriented workplace.
