Under direction, the purpose of the position is to perform semi-skilled to skilled automotive refinishing work in the repair and refurbishment of district owned fleet vehicles and equipment. Employees in this classification function with considerable independence and latitude concerning methods, materials, and priority of assigned work orders. Work areas include, but are not necessarily limited to, glass and fixture replacement, frame repair, and paint and body restoration. Work objectives are to extend the service life and maintain physical integrity of district automotive vehicles and equipment. Performs related work as directed.

  • Responds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.
  • Performs semi-skilled to skilled automotive refinishing work in the repair and refurbishment of district owned fleet vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs vehicle estimates, including pictures, and completing required paperwork.
  • Prepares vehicles and equipment for painting, i.e., sanding and taping, removal and replacement of damaged exterior/interior parts, fabrication and welding, applying body fillers and compounds, priming.
  • Repairs or replaces damaged or missing parts and components, i.e., mirrors, glass, windshields, windows, doors, dispatch radios and wiring, frames, roofing, roof emergency exits, bumpers, frames, remove and install seats.
  • Installs, maintains, services, and/or repairs specialized components and vehicle apparatus, i.e., child safety seats, special needs devices and lifts, including the reconfiguration of seats for wheel chair accommodation.
  • Assists Master level personnel in more complex/advanced refinishing projects for the purpose of enhancing knowledge, skills, and abilities specific to the trade.
  • Ensures compliance with and adherence to applicable Department of Transportation and district policies and safety standards regarding installation, service, and repair activities.
  • Receives work orders, prioritizes assignments, and coordinates equipment, tools, materials, and supplies required per assignment.
  • Fills out and maintains work orders for required materials, supplies and equipment; maintains daily activity and vehicle service logs.
  • Performs necessary calculations in preparing materials and vehicles for installation, maintenance or repair, i.e., glass dimensions, pattern layout, metal/welding dimensions and angles.
  • Operates various manual, electrical, pneumatic, gas-powered equipment and tools in performing assigned tasks, i.e., glass grinders and cutters, sanders, paint sprayers, panel cutters.
  • Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per assigned work order; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS.
  • With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.
  • Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.
  • High school diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum one (1) year progressively skilled and knowledgeable experience in craft mechanical automotive refinishing work, to include familiarity with body parts fabrication principles and procedures; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must have a valid CDL, class B license with passenger and student endorsements or must obtain within 6 months of hiring date and maintain throughout tenure in position.
  • Must complete and pass High Voltage (HV)I and HVII within 12 months of hiring date.
