About The Position

The NC State Highway Patrol is recruiting for an Auto Body Mechanic. Are you an experienced mechanic ready for hands-on vehicle repairs? Join our team and play a key role in keeping our operations running smoothly.

Requirements

  • Internal State Government Posting – Only current permanent and temporary NC State Government and/or University employees or layoff candidates with the State of North Carolina eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by G.S. 126 may apply. (If applicable)
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two (2) years of experience in the area of assignment, or a sufficient year-for- year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to perform several widely varying and diverse assignments that require in-depth knowledge of the design of automotive bodies and related parts and of the methods, tools, and equipment used in their repair or replacement.
  • Working knowledge of the strength and malleability of metals.
  • Working knowledge of the use of a Mig welder in repair or replacement of damaged body panels.
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex vehicle repairs using the proper tools, resources, equipment and training.
  • Ability to read and comprehend repair manuals.

Responsibilities

  • Execute comprehensive body repairs, including dent removal, surface filling, and the restoration of mounting holes for specialized equipment (e.g., antennas and emergency lighting).
  • Restore filing cabinets and out of service vehicles to include but not limited to (hole repair, light bar removal, dents, decal removal, rubber bumper covers and repainting).
  • Replacement of glass of active patrol vehicles (windshields, damaged glass, water leaks, etc.).
  • Completing the detailing of active vehicles including sanding, buffing and re-decaling.
  • Maintain paint shop cleanliness including shop tools and equipment.
