About The Position

The Autism Interventionist assists in providing a high-quality educational and therapeutic program to students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This role focuses on supporting individualized learning, communication, behavior regulation, and social development in a collaborative and inclusive environment. The Autism Interventionist works under the direction of a Special Educator and alongside Related Services Providers to implement evidence-based strategies that promote student growth, independence, and well-being.

Requirements

  • Required: High School Diploma
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working directly with students with autism or developmental disabilities.
  • Understanding of autism spectrum disorder, child development, and behavioral intervention strategies.
  • Ability to implement Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles and evidence-based interventions.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and data collection tools.
  • Flexibility, patience, professionalism, and a commitment to student-centered practices.
  • Staff must maintain Safety-Care or equivalent crisis intervention certification to manage behavioral crises safely and professionally. Physical restraint may only be used in accordance with approved procedures and as a last resort.
  • The position involves significant physical activity, including sitting, standing, walking, and assisting students as needed.
  • Sitting, handling instructional materials, exerting up to 20 lbs. of force.
  • Standing, walking/running, reaching, and exerting up to 40 lbs. of force.
  • Lifting up to 25 lbs., climbing, kneeling, crouching, or pushing/pulling up to 80 lbs. as required to support student safety.

Nice To Haves

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, or a related field
  • Prior experience as a Teaching Assistant, Paraprofessional, or Instructional Aide preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), lesson plans, and related service plans as directed by the Special Educator and therapeutic team.
  • Follow and consistently apply Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), sensory and communication plans, and data collection procedures.
  • Collect and record accurate data on IEP and behavioral goals; input notes promptly.
  • Develop and organize classroom and student materials to support instruction and engagement.
  • Assist students in community-based education settings while maintaining safety and promoting independence.
  • Prepare learning environments daily to ensure readiness and accessibility for students.
  • Support students during transitions, routines, and activities of daily living as appropriate.
  • Use research-based interventions to support students’ social, emotional, and behavioral growth.
  • Encourage the development of independent skills through structured teaching, prompting hierarchies, and positive reinforcement.
  • Build trusting and positive relationships with students through consistent and respectful interaction.
  • Model appropriate social behavior and facilitate peer interactions.
  • Use crisis intervention and physical restraint only as a last resort and in accordance with approved training and student plans.
  • Maintain detailed observation notes and share relevant information for IEP progress and service planning.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, professional development, and training related to autism intervention and behavior support.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, administrators, families, and community partners to ensure consistency and collaboration.
  • Contribute to maintaining materials, equipment, and learning environments in good condition.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all student and family information.
  • Ensure adherence to all laws, policies, and procedures established by the California Department of Education and applicable licensing or certifying bodies.
