About The Position

Under limited supervision, assists teachers, principals and administrators in the development and implementation of District special education programs, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and established guidelines. Provides guidance and instruction to teachers and other school personnel regarding curriculum, placement and programmatic issues in relation to students with disabilities. Assists in evaluating and selecting instructional materials and equipment.

Requirements

  • Requires a Master's degree in special education supplemented by three to five years of successful classroom teaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Must possess teaching certification.

Responsibilities

  • Observes and consults with teachers regarding classroom management and instructional strategies; monitors progress of student achievement.
  • Makes recommendations to teachers for improved instruction as necessary.
  • Interprets instructional programs to administrators, teachers, staff, parents and the community.
  • Develops, revises, correlates and implements curriculum; develops innovative approaches for teaching assigned age group and subject area(s).
  • Develops new programs and services to meet the needs of disabled students and works cooperatively with support services personnel and outside agencies in the delivery of special services to students.
  • Assists in determining eligibility and types of services for which students are eligible.
  • Assigns students to programs and ensures appropriateness of transportation.
  • Assists in evaluating and selecting instructional materials and equipment.
  • Conducts a program of in-service education for assigned staff.
  • Ensures that students with disabilities receive appropriate services and that all programs in area of responsibility are in compliance with applicable District, state and federal laws and guidelines.
  • Advises principals and school personnel of their responsibilities and rights as related to children with disabilities and their families.
  • Monitors program expenditures and prepares budget reports as required.
  • Monitors and/or manages special projects and programs as assigned.
  • Keeps abreast of developments and innovations in the profession.
  • Performs computer data entry to record and retrieve various information and to prepare reports and correspondence.
  • Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various records and reports including expenditure request forms, requisitions, billing invoices, placement reports, hearing board reports, medical and psychological examination reports, student records, court records, technical study reports, attendance records, field trip requests, budget reports, journals, teaching materials, training materials, curriculum plans, progress reports, schedules, calendars, newsletters, transparencies, memos, correspondence, etc.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as a computer, printer, telephone, calculator, copier, fax machine, audio-visual equipment, vehicle, etc.
  • Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the immediate supervisor, other administrators, principals, teachers, other consultants, therapists, psychologists, social workers, guidance counselors, parents, students, Board members, State Department of Education personnel, government/social service agencies, legislators, sales representatives/publishers and the general public.
  • Performs general administrative and clerical tasks, including but not limited to typing, copying and filing documents; answering the telephone; scheduling appointments; attending meetings; maintaining files and records; ordering supplies, etc.
  • Assists in interviewing and selecting new teachers.
  • Serves on committees and task forces, and attends conferences and workshops as appropriate.
  • Performs related duties as required.
