About The Position

The Authorization Specialist at Tarzana Treatment Center is responsible for managing patient authorization status issues related to behavioral healthcare services. This role involves reviewing assessments, applying for authorizations, and communicating with various programs to ensure compliance and maximize revenue. The specialist will also coordinate improvement activities and act as an expert on the authorization process within the organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral health care field or high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 2 years work experience in a behavioral healthcare setting.
  • Prior experience in auditing and/or quality assurance in a healthcare setting is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Los Angeles Department of Public Health and authorization processes is preferred.

  • Experience with SAGE and AVATAR systems.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Review ASAM assessments and relevant items in the SAGE and AVATAR systems to determine appropriate patient authorization needs.
  • Apply for initial and re-authorizations with SAPC in SAGE for all levels of care.
  • Communicate with programs to provide Treatment Plan Updates upon SAPC request and correspond regarding ongoing authorizations.
  • Review appropriate reports for authorization updates and communicate with programs about authorization status as necessary.
  • Request program transfers and discharges to align with authorizations as necessary.
  • Input information into both SAGE and AVATAR systems as required for authorization needs.
  • Review and reconcile denied authorizations from County funding sources and communicate with program staff to reverse denials.
  • Work to automate the review, processing, and reporting of authorizations throughout the organization.
  • Act as an expert on the authorization process for the organization.
  • Work with program staff to review admission and other relevant workflows to improve the authorization process and increase approvals.
  • Attend trainings on authorization processes and communicate findings throughout the organization.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by Program Supervisor or Director.
