About The Position

The Austin Energy Utility Chemist II position is responsible for supporting the power plants by monitoring and adjusting boiler chemistry to ensure optimal operation. This role involves producing water suitable for boiler use, collecting environmental samples, and addressing any equipment issues that may arise. As an essential personnel position, the Chemist II is required to work during emergencies or adverse weather conditions, ensuring the continuity of key operations for the City of Austin.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental or Natural Science or related field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience, with one (1) additional year of experience substituting for one (1) year of required education (maximum substitution of two (2) years).
  • Valid Texas Class 'C' Driver's License.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to climb, crawl, crouch, or assume other non-sitting positions to take samples and check equipment.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and manipulate equipment and supplies weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Experience with wet-chem tests (i.e. pH, phosphates, etc.) and lubrication machinery oil analyses.
  • Experience working in an industrial setting to support power plant boiler chemistry.
  • Experience with reverse osmosis systems.
  • Knowledge of safely working with hazardous chemicals.

Responsibilities

  • Perform specialized chemical analyses on samples to support environmental compliance for electric generating facilities.
  • Evaluate samples to determine appropriate analysis and/or methodology.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and calibrate equipment and/or sterilize equipment.
  • Collect and analyze samples from power plant machinery in accordance with established preventative maintenance programs.
  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot water treatment systems for the production of ultra-pure water and cooling water systems.
  • Support the startups of steam generation units ensuring water production and boiler chemistry are within acceptable criteria.
  • Support engineering and power plant facilities in monitoring, treating, preventing, and removing biological and chemical fouling of water treatment systems.
  • Develop and apply enhanced Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) procedures to improve the quality of results.
  • Perform laboratory tasks in accordance with laboratory standards documented in the Quality Manual.
  • Verify, interpret, and/or approve data and develop reports.
  • Comply with applicable regulatory standards, policies, codes, regulations, and safety guidelines.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures.
  • Coordinate and/or assist in coordinating projects.
