About The Position

This non-merit position is part of County Government's Exempt Service, as provided by Article 4, Title 6, of the Baltimore County Code. Two auditor vacancies exist in the Auditor's Office. The Office of the County Auditor offers performance-based compensation and generous benefits, including health insurance, retirement, leave time, a flexible work schedule, continuing professional education, and educational assistance. Travel is minimal and limited to within the County. The Office of the County Auditor is part of the legislative branch of County Government and serves the Baltimore County Council in its legislative oversight function by providing independent auditing and other fiscal and policy analysis services. The Office's Audit Unit is primarily responsible for performing various types of auditing, including internal control and compliance audits, as well as analyzing annual agency budget requests, and completing special projects as directed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university, with a Bachelor's degree in accounting (preferred), finance, or a closely related field
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 overall on a 4.0 scale
  • Auditing experience, preferably in government and/or public accounting
  • Professional certification (or candidate), preferably CPA, CIA, or CFE
  • Knowledge of government auditing standards and government accounting
  • Strong research, analytical, and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to remain focused on the big picture
  • Proficiency in performing spreadsheet and database analysis
  • High level of professional skepticism
  • Capacity to work effectively and efficiently, both independently and as part of a team
  • The ability and willingness to interact with and question agency personnel

Responsibilities

  • Research agency operations including applicable laws, regulations, and policies and procedures
  • Evaluate/test internal controls and perform analyses
  • Determine compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and policies and procedures
  • Develop audit findings and recommendations
  • Prepare and document electronic working papers
  • Interact with agency personnel and work with the engagement team
  • Analyze and report on agency budget requests and other financial matters
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
