About The Position

The Auditing Technician 2 position resides in the Business & Income Taxes Division of the Department of Revenue. This division manages a variety of Montana tax types, including business, individual, and natural resources. The auditing technicians perform a variety of duties assigned by management, including conducting simple examinations of various types of tax returns, adjusting tax returns, conducting research, communicating internally and externally, and participating in the appeal process. The position does not supervise other staff.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED qualification.
  • One year of professional work experience in accounting, money management, banking, bookkeeping, or a related field is preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of basic accounting and financial reporting principles.
  • Knowledge of basic State and Federal tax regulations.
  • Skills in research and analysis.
  • Skills in accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Basic mathematics skills.
  • Conflict resolution and customer service skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft programs and other database applications.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct simple examinations of various types of tax returns.
  • Adjust tax returns as necessary.
  • Conduct research related to tax compliance.
  • Communicate internally and externally regarding tax matters.
  • Participate in the appeal process for tax assessments.
  • Provide support for other unit operations and complex examination activities.
