Responsible for providing primary care to patients who have hearing, balance, and related ear problems.
Responsibilities
Examines patients to identify symptoms of hearing loss and other auditory, balance, and related sensory and neural problems.
Assesses the nature and extent of the problems using testing devices to measure the loudness at which a person begins to hear sounds and to distinguish between sounds. Assesses the impact of hearing loss on an individual''s daily life.
Evaluates and diagnoses balance disorders, interprets results, and may coordinate treatment plan with medical, educational, and psychological information to make a diagnosis and determine a course of action.
Develops and implements hearing loss treatment plan, which may include cleaning the ear canal, fitting/dispensing hearing aids, and fitting/programming cochlear implants.
Counsels patients about hearing, balance, and related problems. Educates them about treatment plan including care and maintenance of hearing aids.
