About The Position

Grow your legal career and help shape utility regulation across the state by joining the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC)! The PSC is currently recruiting to fill an Attorney vacancy in the Office of General Counsel. The PSC is an independent state agency that is responsible for regulating more than 1,100 Wisconsin public utilities, which provide electric, natural gas, combined water and sewer utilities, and certain aspects of local telephone service to households and businesses throughout the state! The PSC of Wisconsin ensures safe, reliable, affordable, and environmentally responsible utility services and equitable access to telecommunications and broadband services. This position offers a hybridized work schedule. This schedule may change based on operational needs and organizational requirements. The position is headquartered at the Hill Farms State Office Building in Madison, WI. This position will be required to come into the office for scheduled in-person workdays, training, meetings and/or operational needs. Employees will be generally expected to telework from within the State of Wisconsin. Further questions regarding hybrid and remote work may be discussed more at the time of the interview. This position will provide legal services to the agency in dockets before the Commission. Additionally, this position will represent the Commission in proceedings before all levels of state and federal courts and before federal and other state administrative agencies as well as provide all other legal services to the Public Service Commission. As an Attorney for the PSC, this position work predominantly with utility, administrative, and environmental laws.

Requirements

  • Candidates must be licensed to practice law in the State of Wisconsin by the time of appointment.
  • Conducting legal research and making determinations or recommendations based on legal research
  • Preparing formal legal documents, such as briefs, pleadings, affidavits, or orders with respect to pending court or agency proceedings
  • Writing memoranda and correspondence related to dockets

Nice To Haves

  • Legal experience related to utility law, administrative law, or environmental law
  • Working on litigation at all levels of state and federal courts and administrative agencies
  • Preparing witnesses, testimony, cross-examination, and argument for court and agency proceedings
  • Advising clients on compliance with state and federal statutes, rules and guidance

Responsibilities

  • Provide legal services to the agency in dockets before the Commission.
  • Represent the Commission in proceedings before all levels of state and federal courts and before federal and other state administrative agencies
  • Provide all other legal services to the Public Service Commission.
  • Work predominantly with utility, administrative, and environmental laws.
