About The Position

The Attorney II - Assistant Prosecuting Attorney position at Kalamazoo County Government is responsible for representing citizens in various legal matters, including criminal, quasi-criminal, and civil cases. Requirements

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • 1 to 3 years of related work experience practicing law in government or family law.
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan.

Responsibilities

  • Represents citizens in criminal, child abuse, neglect, delinquency, child support, and other quasi-criminal and civil matters.
  • Advocates for the OPA's position in various hearings, including preliminary examinations and motions.
  • Screens and charges felony and misdemeanor criminal cases.
  • Prepares and files motions, stipulations, and responses to defense pleadings for trials.
  • Researches, evaluates, and investigates in preparation for trials, including consulting with expert witnesses.
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and other relevant parties.
  • Directs legal assistants and victim advocates regarding the production of exhibits for hearings and trials.
  • Responds to case inquiries and legal questions from victims, witnesses, law enforcement, and the public.
  • Researches and proposes alternative approaches to divert and treat trauma-exposed participants outside of the criminal justice system.
  • Meets with victims to discuss case strengths, weaknesses, and potential solutions.
  • Establishes and fosters positive relationships with legal staff, court officials, and law enforcement.
  • Calculates sentencing guidelines for felony offenses.
  • Performs related work as required.
