About The Position

The position involves providing personal care and custodianship to students with diverse and special transportation needs during a split shift workday. The role requires a commitment to following prescribed policies and procedures, particularly in relation to Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students with physical, mental, or emotional needs. The individual will work closely with students, parents, school personnel, and co-workers to ensure a safe and supportive environment for special needs students during transportation.

Requirements

  • College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred).
  • Good medical health to include the physical ability to climb in and out of the school bus emergency door to assist in emergency evacuations.
  • Ability to understand and respond to verbal and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to work productively without continual supervision.
  • Interest in and empathy for Special Needs students.

Responsibilities

  • Follow prescribed Katy ISD policy and procedures according to IEP's in the loading/unloading/securing of students who may have physical/mental/emotional needs.
  • Demonstrate reliable and regular attendance.
  • Provide direct and indirect behavior management observation and student discipline assistance during the transport of Special Needs students.
  • Establish and maintain a good relationship with students, parents, school personnel and co-workers.
  • Attend route drive days with the driver to learn the route, students and student adaptive equipment needs as required for the route.
  • Attend trainings scheduled by the transportation department to further the safety of the students transported (i.e. CPI and/or CPR trainings).
  • Perform emergency evacuation of students, if needed, to include the need to lift students in emergency situations.
  • Attend bi-monthly safety trainings as provided by the department.
  • Attend KISD Transportation in-service training classes annually prior to the official school start or as designated by the department.
  • Have knowledge of assigned routes to be able to guide and to assist a substitute driver.
  • Assist in pre-trip and post-trip inspections as needed by the driver.
  • Assist in keeping the interior of the bus clean and sanitized after each trip.
  • Work as a partner with the driver or substitute to ensure safe transit to the students of Katy ISD.
  • Report any driver infractions to the assigned Lead Driver, Driver Manager or Assistant Director as soon as possible.
  • Read and follow established procedures and guidelines in the Katy ISD Auxiliary, Transportation and Special Needs handbooks.
