About The Position

The Attendance Specialist at Sioux City Community Schools is responsible for supporting students and families in overcoming attendance challenges. This role involves collaborating with parents, school personnel, and community agencies to promote student attendance and engagement in school activities. The specialist will also conduct home visits, provide referral services, and maintain communication with various stakeholders to ensure students receive the necessary support for regular attendance.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in social work or related field preferred.
• Experience working with students and families.
• Excellent organizational skills and interpersonal communication skills.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, with bilingual skills preferred.
• Ability to handle multiple complex tasks and assignments effectively.
• Problem-solving skills to identify issues and create action plans.
• Competence in technology for data collection and sorting.

Responsibilities

• Provides information to parents to assist their children.
• Promotes participation of parents in school activities.
• Provides referral services to outside agencies as needed.
• Identifies reasons for student non-attendance and works toward solutions.
• Develops action plans with families, students, and school personnel to establish full attendance.
• Carries out home visits to support parents in encouraging attendance.
• Encourages effective dialogue between parents and school personnel about student progress.
• Coordinates with community service agencies and other organizations to improve student attendance.
• Stays informed about attendance laws and advises staff on updates or changes.
• Reviews attendance reports and conducts research on dropout trends.
• Visits homes of truant students to encourage attendance and may involve law enforcement if necessary.
• Provides small group support to students within the school setting.
• Determines the need for support groups or parenting classes in partnership with parents.
• Maintains confidentiality regarding school matters.
