About The Position

The Attendance Officer is responsible for enforcing compulsory attendance laws in Virginia and Loudoun County Public Schools. This role involves investigating truancy cases, assisting with residency verification, collaborating with school teams to improve student attendance, and initiating legal proceedings against parents or guardians who fail to ensure their children's school attendance. The position also includes maintaining records, providing consultations to parents, and coordinating re-enrollment processes for students transitioning from state care facilities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in counseling, teaching, or a related field; Master's Degree in school counseling, mental health, or school social work preferred.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in a counseling, teaching, and/or human services capacity.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates incidences of truancy from school.
  • Assists school administration in residency verification based on local and state requirements.
  • Works in coordination with schools and other agencies to improve student attendance and enforce compulsory attendance laws.
  • Investigates cases of non-enrolled children.
  • Collaborates with school teams to develop attendance plans and monitor interventions for students with excessive unexcused absences.
  • Initiates legal proceedings against parents or guardians who unlawfully fail to ensure their children attend school.
  • Maintains records of prosecuted cases and other services performed.
  • Provides consultations to parents/guardians regarding attendance concerns.
  • Collaborates with school-based mental health teams to monitor chronic absenteeism and provide resources to students and families.
  • Coordinates the re-enrollment process for students transitioning from state care facilities.
