About The Position

Applied Technology Services (ATS) is an internal service organization that provides high quality technical services and expertise on an as-needed basis to all lines of business at Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). Based at PG&E’s San Ramon Technology Center, ATS is a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 120 engineers and technical personnel who perform work in the ATS San Ramon offices and laboratories, and in the field. This role will involve a senior engineer’s guidance in developing proactive solutions for PG&E’s future. Specifically, the candidate will be exposed to asset risk management approaches and theories in a hands-on way by supporting the Materials & Failure Analysis teams and electric operations asset management teams. The candidate will be exposed to concepts in metallurgy, heat transfer and failure analysis while getting hands-on lab work with a variety of materials including but not limited to steel (pipes, valves, vessels), aluminum (conductors, fittings, connectors), copper (conductors, valves), and ceramics (insulators). The candidate will assist a senior-level failure analysis engineer with performing testing, analysis, and writing reports. The Engineer will directly support the increase in rapid failure analysis completed during the summer by performing inspection, analysis and reporting for the enhanced ignition investigation program. The individual will be expected to be hands-on in ATS metallurgical laboratory with an emphasis on failure analysis inspection techniques. The candidate will operate various lab equipment including a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), light microscopes, and FTIR spectroscopy, under a lab technician’s supervision. Additionally, the engineer will be expected to develop and implement continuous improvement of lab activities with a focus on sample inventory management, lab processes, job aids and safety initiatives. This role will occasionally be tasked with supporting miscellaneous engineering/test projects to ensure that ATS continues to provide value high-value, innovative, proactive solutions to PG&E business units in a cost-effective way.

Requirements

  • Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical, Materials, Chemical Engineering or other related degrees at an accredited University
  • Must be continuing their education towards degree during and/or after the internship

Nice To Haves

  • Completed Bachelor degree in Engineering and currently pursuing Master degree in Engineering with emphasis in a discipline related to assignments. (i.e., material science, mechanical engineering, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge in engineering research and testing concepts, theories, practices, methods, and techniques.
  • Basic investigative skills.

Responsibilities

  • Applies basic engineering principles and scientific theory to perform testing, calculations and analysis under direction of senior peers or supervisor.
  • Typically assigned to routine work where precedents, standards, protocols and techniques exists.
  • May design the test plans for assignments/projects and select standards, methods and protocols. Reviews design and test plans with senior peer or supervisor.
  • Develops knowledge in a specific ATS area of specialty or discipline.
  • Partners with senior technical peers to develop proficiency in a variety of issues. Assists with the more complex projects by compiling and providing technical data.
  • Prepare monthly progress reports on productivity, turnaround time, and other critical business metrics for respective assignments.
