The Argonne Tandem Linear Accelerator System (ATLAS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) is pleased to announce an opening for an Accelerator Engineer with experience related to charged particle accelerating systems. ATLAS is the world’s first heavy ion superconducting linear accelerator, and for over four decades has operated as a national user facility to explore the frontiers of nuclear physics and its applications. The operation of ATLAS depends on the integration of many systems – cryogenic distribution, ultra-high vacuum (UHV), computer monitoring and control, ion source operation, beam diagnostics, radiofrequency control and amplification, and electric and magnetic beam transport devices. Familiarity with one or more of these systems is highly desired. Key responsibilities of the ATLAS Accelerator Engineer include designing and building new equipment and functionality, as well as maintaining and improving current systems. The potential candidate will be expected to work within a small project team and regularly interact with operations and scientific staff. Excellent communication and teamwork skills are essential. The ideal candidate will be a flexible, results-oriented problem-solver who requires minimal supervision. Assignments can vary greatly, and the successful applicant must thrive in taking on new challenges.
